Corporate social responsibility (CSR)

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to a business model that involves participating in business activities that benefit the people. In 2001 the State government realized that CSR was becoming mainstream as forward-thinking agencies or companies embedded sustainability into the core of their business operations to value of economic development in the society mainly the poor. As the agency mandated to implement social rural development to focus on poverty eradication programmes in Sabah, CSR is a part of everyday activity to the SLDB. This is due to the SLDB is direct investment in the community while respecting and interests of stakeholders investors, customers, and employees. The good of the community and the environment are reflected in the company’s policies and actions.On top of this direct investment in the community through profit sharing projects, the SLDB also has contributed to the development of social, cultural and religious activities in the community. By investing to improving various aspects of local communities. It empowers individuals with the skills needed to effect change, including building political power and working for a common agenda based on values of fairness, opportunity, and social justice. Among the activities that have been implemented by the SLDB in the name of CSR are; Al-Quran study among the settlers children, development of community mosques, and social and capacity building activity with settlers children.

Empowering Children

Hill climbing, morning exercise and treasure hunt are among the outdoor activities enjoyed by 49 children of settlers during a three-day motivational camp in UiTM Sabah, Kota Kinabalu campus in early June 2014. The Programme was organized in collaboration with UiTM Sabah it aimed to build leadership skills among the settlers children represented from various districts throughout the state. In addition, to hiking the motivational camp also taught learning techniques such as, communication skills and group training. The SLDB Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Syaheddrul Rahman Joddari closed the programme with satisfaction and hoped that the initiative would encourage the children to assest their parents involvement within the SLDB agricultural development schemes. He further added “this program is crucial because it seeks to avert the settlers’ children from unhealthy social activity which would hurt their future”. He also hoped that the CSR programme would further strengthen the relationship between SLDB with local higher learning institution like UiTM. One participant, Cheerlyn Antalas (15) from Kampung Kungkular, Tenom, said the CSR motivation programme is a very good learning process to help her become independent.
