Nabawan

The main objective of the Nabawan scheme is to improve the living standard of the local people in Nabawan. This scheme was derived from the Malaysian agenda known as ‘Gerakan Desa Wawasan’ proposed during the Ninth Malaysia Plan with an objective to fully eradicate poverty from Malaysia by 2020. Legally the scheme includes an area under the status of commercial forest reserve (Class II) which is under the jurisdiction of the Sabah Forestry Department.

The majority of people in Nabawan are from the Murut ethnic group. They come from an agricultural background as smallholders and subsistence peasant farmers, as well as workers in the governmental sector. The original number of participants was 438 individual, but since September 2012 an additional 311 individual have joined the palm oil replanting programme with the SLDB bringing the total up to 749 participants.
